- Read to your child as much as possible!!! After reading, ask a question or two to see what your child understood about the story. "What happened after ___?" "What did you think about the ending?" "How was (the main character) feeling when ___?"
- Have your child practice writing his/her first name with correct letter formation (one uppercase letter followed by lowercase letters).
- Play oral rhyming games with your child. "I'm thinking of a word that rhymes with bee. Hint: It is a home to birds and squirrels." (Student would respond, "tree")
- Practice counting up to ten household objects. Make sure that your child says the next number in sequence for each object he/she touches. Look to see if he/she touches an object more than one time or skips one. Try straight lines of objects, arrays, circular, or scattered arrangements.
- Talk about school as much as possible! "What did you do during writing workshop today?" "What activity did you go to?" "What center did you go to today? What did you do there?" To extend this conversation, have your child draw or write something about his/her day. (S)he may draw a picture of recess and write "P" for "playground." Applaud it!
