This week, we learned how Christmas is celebrated in different countries in Europe as well as Japan. We learned about Chanukah, playing dreidel games, making candles, and listening/dancing to traditional festive music. We learned about Kwanzaa, a holiday that means "first fruits of the harvest," and Diwali, a celebration of lights. Guest speakers from our classroom included Paige's grandmother (Christmas in Europe), Jacob's grandmother (Chanukah), and Elizabeth's mom (Christmas in Japan). We had a great time this week leading up to our break. I hope your child will share some of the things he/she learned. Enjoy your time with your children and whatever you celebrate, may it be a happy time filled with family, friends, and many blessings! See you in the new year! :)

We had a particularly outstanding writing workshop today! This week, we are working on writing to answer questions. We are rereading our work to make sure we gave as much information as possible. Today, we created a checklist for our informational books so we know when our work is truly finished. We want to check that each page has a detailed illustration, we have at least one sentence on every page, we've reread and added more information, and we gave our books a title and cover illustration. During our peer share afterwards, students got to ask their classmates questions to help them strengthen their writing. Parents,
We have begun presenting our "Then and Now" interview findings! The projects are looking awesome, and it sounds like our students have learned a lot! If you have not had a chance to work on the project with your child, he/she can always bring it in next week. We will continue presentations over the coming days. If you need the assignment directions once more, you can click this link to read them! Thank you all for helping extend your child's understanding of life long ago and how it compares to our lives today. On Tuesday, we had visitors from the Historic Foundation of Columbia come teach us about life long ago. We dressed like people from the past, we learned dominoes, we used a stereoscope to view pictures in 3-D, we wrote on slates, and we made calling cards. It was a blast! Today, we kicked off our "Then and Now" unit by researching in the media center with Mrs. Scullion and Mrs. Peebles. We began learning what life was like a long time ago in four different areas: school, transportation, communication, and fun. Then, we talked about how life then compares with our lives now. We have a lot more to learn with this topic, so look forward to more information coming home soon!
Parents,
We spent the week leading up to our field trip exploring pumpkins. After feeling the inside of a pumpkin, your child wrote an opinion piece on whether or not they liked the way pumpkin pulp felt. Check out some awesome pictures! On Tuesday, we celebrated Veterans Day at Forest Lake! We had a beautiful assembly in the gym with performances by the entire second grade, our fourth and fifth grade chorus, and a brass quintet of army veterans! Then, we had two soldiers from Fort Jackson come read to us, answer questions about the military, and run some drills with us! We learned how to do push-ups and give our attention to the sergeant. We are thankful and appreciative to all those who have been or are currently in service!

Welcome! My name is Elizabeth McKenna, and this is my eighth year teaching kindergarten. I am thrilled to be a part of our eLc program and our FLE family! Beth Busbee is our outstanding teaching assistant who happens to be a lifelong educator herself. Thank you for allowing us to teach and learn with your child every day. We can't wait to get started!
